Stranger danger: What happens when adults and children share a virtual playground?

Disclaimer: We observed other users but did not interact with them, to ensure we didn’t influence their behaviours in any way. Scenes depicted in the film below were unprovoked and often happened just moments after we entered social hangout spaces.

Our latest research explores the world of Roblox—a gaming platform used by 34.5 million children every day.

We set up a 42-year-old male avatar, who observed interactions but did not speak to any of the users. What we uncovered was deeply troubling.

Within minutes, our avatar witnessed users engaging in suggestive behaviours—grunting noises, avatars lying on top of each other, and players repeating “jerk me”. Others exchanged Snapchat details, directing conversations off-platform.

These interactions unfolded in a space accessible to children as young as 13.

Roblox is a virtual playground— but unlike traditional playgrounds, there’s minimal safeguards or supervision. What are the implications of allowing adults and children mix freely online?
